With over 30 years of experience in circulation marketing, I have worked with every conceivable type of magazine and newsletter ranging from under 100 subscriptions to more than 10,000,000. As Managing Partner of Stuart R. Jordan Consulting, LLC, I have provided circulation, direct marketing, and business plan solutions to a wide variety of well-known publishing clients including Reader’s Digest, WebMD, New England Journal of Medicine, New York Magazine and Martha Stewart Living.
My extensive experience in publication circulation, financial planning, magazine turn-arounds and general management consulting has been utilized by a number of established publications, including: American Girl, Bon Appetit, Computerworld, Destination Discovery, Episodes, Harvard Business Review, National Gardening and W Magazine. I have also been a major contributor to the launches of some of the best known (and widely discussed) publications of the last twenty years, developing circulation business plans and test marketing programs for titles including Brill’s Content, The Industry Standard, Spirtuality & Health, Talk Magazine, and Jane Magazine.
As COO and Managing Director of University Health Publishing Group, one of America ’s most prestigious consumer health organizations, I directed the subscription marketing and business operations for the consumer health newsletters, books, reports, and websites that UHPG created for UC Berkeley and Johns Hopkins Medicine.
While at UHPG, I directed the development of the company’s successful digital efforts including the launch of www.JohnsHopkinsHealthAlerts.com which has grown to over 300,000 subscribers and almost $2 million in sales. During that time, I also managed the preparation of UHPG’s sale for the company’s owners and subsequent successful integration as an operating group for the new owners.
In 2000 Steven Brill recruited me to be a pivotal player in his organization, where I served as Senior Vice President-Circulation for Media Central, a business-to-business publisher with more than 150 products targeting the media industry. Simultaneously, I directed the circulation operation for Brill’s Content, and served as Senior Vice President, Operations for the internet e-commerce start-up, Contentville.com.
My professional career has always been circulation-driven. I got my start at CBS Magazines, learnin the basics and progressed to work on the circulation promotion and business management of Field & Stream, Mechanix Illustrated, Cuisine, World Tennis and Audio. During my tenure at CBS, I was also responsible for the introduction of personal computers into the circulation department.
Leaving CBS to becoming a founding partner of Lighthouse Communications Group, I was instrumental in developing the Lighthouse Publishing Models that are still used in many circulation departments. While at Lighthouse, I also founded Jordan-Savage Direct, a leading direct response agency at the time.
My expertise in circulation marketing led me to join Database Resouces as Managing Partner. There I developed and implemented diverse marketing projects, including book programs for American Express and DRTV for Harry & David, as well as continuing to focus on circulation strategies for publications.
In 1995, I accepted an opportunity to join Circulation Specialists, Inc., the Norwalk, CT. based service company that specializes in circulation outsource services for publishers. As President and CEO, I was involved with the outsourced circulation management for over thirty magazines including Civilization, Worth, Sloan Management Review, Rodale’s Fitness Swimmer, Phoenix Magazine, Old House Interiors, Ireland of the Welcomes, ArtNews and Doubletake. I lead CSI through 5 years of unprecedented growth, including a successful management buyout, before taking on the challenge of the various Brill initiatives.
I have always been very active in educational efforts to the publishing community. I have been a teacher and speaker at numerous seminars and conferences sponsored by the Direct Marketing Association, Folio Magazine, the Magazine Publishers of America, and the Florida Magazine Association. My “Circulation Boot Camp” seminars at FOLIO quickly became one of their most popular sessions.
I wrote the extremely popular weekly column on Direct Marketing in MagazineWeek and continue to contribute articles and columns on circulation for various publications, and have often been quoted as an industry expert by Ad Age and the New York Times.
I received a BA in Economics with honors from Haverford College.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of wonderful publishing professionals. Here are a few examples of the kind words about my services and capabilities from some of them:
"Stuart Jordan and I have worked together off and on for the past 15-20 years. Stuart is a consummate professional in the area of publishing/subscription/membership metrics (both online and offline) and the expertise of organizing useful and usable models that reflect the dynamics of the business and can be used both for budgeting and for forward planning. Over the years he has worked with VSS as a consultant a number of times on various platform or prospective investment opportunities, and also as the employed Managing Director of one of the subscription based consumer publishing businesses acquired by one of the VSS portfolio companies. Stuart is a thoughtful, honest and detail conscious guy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Stuart for a publishing forecasting/consulting engagement, central to which are the array of direct marketing channels for new customer acquisition. Stuart has worked with most of the subscription/membership fulfillment and customer record outsourced providers and most of the modeling platforms used by modern publishing and direct marketing managers today."
"Stuart Jordan and I have known each other for a very long time. Our most recent experience was the most telling as Stuart lead University Health Publishing Group through a time of extreme peril. He was the President during the sale by the estate of the owner for which I was the executor. In an extremely difficult environment, he directed all the marketing and business operations, provided leadership to the staff, managed bank and other creditor relations with level headed coolness, and protected the main assets of the firm."
"Our Facebook FastTrack training began exactly one week ago. We held a 48 hour contest for students to get their Facebook ads and landing pages up and running. STUART JORDAN sent in this glowing report about his passion which is Dog Rescue" http://www.perrymarshall.com/9836/rescuing-dogs-on-facebook/
